The Death of a Character

The reason for this post is because of a death on the series Being Human (UK). The death wasn’t a surprise to me, I knew it was coming and yet it still hurt because the character was so beloved, one of my favorite characters on the show. That death was necessary to advance the storyline but also as a way to prevent bad things from happening. I respect the writers of the show for going there and taking that risk.

Anyway, My first visceral experience of an author killing off a character, something that really shook me was J.K. Rowling *Spoiler Alert* Killing off Sirius. It was shocking, emotionally jarring and something that shook me to the core. I was right there with Harry when Sirius died. I still get a bit teary when I think about it.

Death in a story should progress the plot, it shouldn’t be just something for shock and awe. Another series that comes to mind that involves a lot of death is Game of Thrones. Each death progresses the story, pushes the characters and creates some new and sometimes odd dynamics. Death in a sense is a character itself, haunting each character whether it will come about due to political machinations or a battle or a situation of something they shouldn’t have seen you’re reminded that someone could die. No one is safe in that world even if we’d like to think that our personal favorites are.

I’ve read stories where the deaths of characters fits into the story perfectly. It doesn’t necessarily drive it but reminds of the setting the characters are in and just how wrong things can go if someone isn’t careful or things really hit the fan. One story that comes to mind was a Book Club pick for the Offerings group, The UnTied Kingdom by Kate Johnson, what happened fit in perfectly and was very well written. Another case for the death of a character is to really set the story off. The series that comes to mind is JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. In the first book, within the first few pages boom there it was. Both shocking and yet it sets the tone for the war between the Brotherhood and the Lessers. And another death that I thought of that was both necessary and emotionally sad was from the Vampire Babylon series by Chris Marie Green.

I’ve been thinking about death and characters and my own work both old and new. Don’t worry your favorite characters are safe…for now. But it’s still on my mind. I really admire authors willing to really go there. Killing off a character can really explode in your face if done wrong. So the question to authors is: How do you decide to kill off a character? What makes you decide to go that route?

And Readers here’s a few questions for you: How do you feel when a character is killed off? Does it make you not want to read the rest of the book? Not support the author? Do respect the author for making the decision they did?

To both Authors and Readers: What makes a death stand out? When it comes to villains do you feel that their death should be slow and painful or quick and creative? Are there any stories that stand out in your mind that involve the death of a character?

A bit of a warning: As Game of Thrones is really popular right now and in Season 2, which would set it in the second book, please avoid spoiling the other deaths for readers who are watching the show and don’t know. If you must discuss the death put Spoiler Alert in the comment before you discuss the death.

What I’m Obsessing Over

I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones.  I love both the books and the TV Series. It’s interesting watching the changes that are getting made and I love talking to my buddy Chris Marie Green/Christine Cody/Crystal Green  about the differences between the books and the show. It’s fun geeking out with her. Watching the series only whets my appetite for the next book in the series. But in the meantime all I can do is re-read the series, make notes of the major points in the story that I missed and try to speculate on what might happen next. What do you think of the books and the TV series? Are you loving the second season?

The next thing I’m obsessing over is Once Upon a Time. Watching it not only makes me what to write a fairy tale redo or two  (I already have ideas for them) but also it’s just so darn fun to speculate as to what will happen next. I love trying to figure out what Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin  is up to. The character development of the series is so good, you think you know what the person is about and then the writers go and surprise you. It’s wonderful and wicked at the same time. So what mysteries are you waiting to be unraveled? What characters are you loving? Or loving to hate? What do you think will happen next?

As to books, I just saw that Iced by Karen Marie Moning is up for pre-order. So excited! The cover looks awesome! As to reading material, I’m really loving reading mysteries. The Book Club pick for this month is: Storm Front by Jim Butcher and I’m loving the story so far.

So what books are you reading? What music is going around in your head? What TV show is your new fav? I’m loving GCB, it’s hilarious.

Music Monday Pick 03/26/12

I discovered this song a week ago and fell in love with it. The song even inspired a plot bunny or two.

Hope you enjoyed that. What’s your Music Monday Pick?

Why I watch the TV Show Chuck

Don?t worry I?m not going to do massive spoilers. I can?t do that to my friends on the West Coast or in Australia who haven?t seen it yet. Normally I don?t really blog about TV shows. I just say this is what I?m watching and leave it at that. But this time I wanted to do something. I know people have been wondering why Chuck and not say Law and Order or Heroes? Honestly I don?t know. What I do know is that I?m grateful to NBC for keeping the show alive (Pleeeaaassse give us a whole 22 episodes season, pleeeeaaassseee).

To be honest I didn’t watch in the beginning. Too many freakin shows on at the same for me to watch. But I became curious after reading my friend Chris/Crystal Green’s Chuck recaps (her show recaps rock!) on her blog. Then I saw one episode and was hooked. I had to see them all.?Chuck isn?t a show that many will get. It?s not as complicated as Lost or as flashy as 24. It didn?t get lost in its mythos like Heroes did. At the core of the show, at it?s heart, the show is about Chuck and those that Chuck loves. His family. He may not be an uber spy like Bryce Larkin (Dear God, Matt Boomer is gorgeous) nor is he as suave as James Bond. He does bumble and fumble but he means well. In his heart of hearts he is a good guy, a sweet guy. He may not be your first choice but he is the guy who will go over to your house with your fav ice cream and a playlist of all your favorite songs if you?ve had a hell of a day. He?s the guy who will be there for you no matter what.
Chuck is the type of guy who will do the right thing no matter how much it hurts him. He?s the guy who will sacrifice it all for those that he loves even if it means risking his life. He is all about family: Ellie, Awesome, Morgan, Sarah and Casey. Yes, even Big Mike and, um, well, Jeff and Lester. Yeah them too. And that?s what we love about him. He?s loyal to a fault, good hearted, well meaning and a sweetheart. And yeah he?ll dress up for Comic Con and drag you along but you?ll have a hell of time there. He?s a dork but he can laugh at himself and he can fix your computer, pretty snazzy, I know! LOL.

Chuck is neither hip nor the hot, happening, it show of the moment. It just is. Season 3 had its ups and downs and there were gripes but this finale shows us yet again why we love the show, the writers and actors. There was action, humor, moments that made our hearts melt and there was a pay off (those wicked, infuriating, clever, wonderful writers). Looking back I feel as if over the seasons it?s been a natural progression, very organic, never hurried. The writers took their time. Nothing felt crammed in or over the top to me. There didn?t seem to be a need to outdo last week. Although for a moment there, some episodes made me wonder if I was watching a season finale and they didn?t tell us. LOL.

I for one think 3 months or however long we?ll have to wait for the new season is too long. But it?s worth the wait. This TV show Chuck is a keeper. And I can?t wait to see where they take us. To me the finale didn?t feel like an ending, it felt like just the beginning of a new chapter. Sorta like Supernatural, a reboot of sorts. Okay enough of my blathering. I return you now to your regularly scheduled program whatever that may be.

Oh and watch White Collar on USA Network (or whatever channel it airs on where you are). How can you resist those gorgeous blue eyes of Matt Boomer’s? Seriously, he?s just gorgeous. I said that already didn?t I? Am I drooling? Sorry. *blush*

Music Mondays

I’ve been doing this for the past I think two weeks on FB and a few loops so I decided to post today’s pick here.

Joga by Bjork

What’s your pick to start the week off?

Happy Holidays! Got Ink?

I wish everyone a Happy Holiday and may your New Year be prosperous and filled with joy and happiness!

Okay, so the Got Ink part of my post. Do you have a tattoo? Would you like to get one?

I already know I want at least three tattoos, one on both my wrists and this cute guy on my back:

Not that exact picture. I’m sure you’re wondering why, right? Well, that’s the cartoon I watch that makes me feel better if I’m having a crappy day. Plus I love penguins. *Grin*

Moving on, I’d consider getting the Sanskrit symbol for Voice above my Chakra point on the back of my neck:

Being able to speak and voice your opinions and such is very important. For so long I never really expressed myself. This is a reminder to me that I have a voice and I have to use it. My opinions matter, at least to me they do.

And lastly this:

The Kanji for Love (Ai). For those of you who watch Naruto, you know that the character of Gaara has this etched into his forehead. I am a fan of the character but that isn’t the reason why I’d get the tattoo. Love is very important. And to love and respect one’s self is very important. Depression can really drag love for one’s self down and make a person feel unworthy. This reminds me that depression is only aspect of myself and that love is still there inside of me somewhere.I have an idea of where I’d like it be, but I won’t be telling. LOL

So what do you think?

If you have any tattoos can you share what they mean to you? And if you want to get one, what would it be?

Happy Holidays Everyone!
