Blurb:

One dragon is hot enough, but three can make this tiger shifter burn in the most delightful ways.

Tiger shifter Louisa thought she’d ring in the New Year all alone. Little did she know that three younger dragon shifters plan on making sure she celebrates things right. Add a little steam, a few dragon shifters with dirty minds, and some creative use of furniture and New Year’s Eve becomes the perfect scorching-hot party for four.

Excerpt:

Louisa ran a rag over the dark, wood bar and glanced up at the clock. She had a few hours to get home, put on a party hat, and settle down in front of the TV before the ball dropped. Another year gone and alone as usual. Her sister was off partying Goddess only knew where. Not even a call to invite her to a party.
Her thoughts strayed to the Trio of Trouble, her co-workers, Torsten, Brent and Fletcher. The thought of those three sent a shiver down her spine and heat spreading through her stomach. From Brent’s laid-back, easy charm and smile and his sky blue eyes that always glittered with mischief and flirtation to Fletch—she could sense a sensitive soul under all the bluff and bluster. And then there was their leader, the quiet and intense Tor, whose gaze never seemed to stray far from her. In his brown eyes flecked with silver, she could see unspoken desires and emotions as well as thoughts he kept to himself.
Her feline curiosity was always piqued when she looked at him. There were so many questions he wanted to ask. For all the times she tried to ignore her desires for him and his friends, her brain refused to keep her thoughts in order. Like clockwork, the fantasies she tried to keep strictly to nighttime would rise as soon as she saw one of them, and they only increased in intensity when she looked at Tor.
As of late, those fancies had turned to the ménage variety. At first her dreams were plagued by singular encounters. The more she hung around them, the more all of them would filter into her mind during sleep. The idea of having one man had satisfied her, but three—especially those three—brought to mind her nightly fantasies. Her feline side would come to life, adding more intense wants like bondage, the chase, blood and good, long, hard sex. It had been so long since she’d indulged in her tiger’s wants and needs.
Being a tiger was a lot harder to manage than being a lion or jaguar. Tigers had darker wants and needs, more violence. Being pent up in one place didn’t suit. And unlike some other shifters they didn’t settle down with one person. Monogamy was a foreign concept.
Her parents hadn’t been married when she came along, and once she was old enough her father took off and her mother just kept going. Bouncing around from one place to another gave her a sense of never knowing home and, unlike her kin, craving one place to stay and live. Finding Shadowed Bay had been perfect—a haven for paranormal and human to live and work side by side without much fuss or muss.
Now that she had a home, there was nothing she wanted to do to threaten it, and getting involved with one dragon, much less three, wasn’t on her list of wants no matter how much they made her burn and yearn for sex. There was also the resistance to any sort of relationship. Lonely as her existence had been, she didn’t want to be mated.
As soon as she’d come of age, her mother had tried to pass her off to a tiger who was more interested in having a harem than a relationship beyond the sex. After a lot of yelling, threats, and a fight to escape him, she’d been freed, but not without a warning that she was a marked and exiled woman. It had been her luck to be set up with an Alpha Tiger who had a lot of pull and sway. He’d made it clear she was to be shunned by her kind. Tigers and other felines—out of fear—avoided her like the plague unless they had to interact with her, and even then they’d need a written declaration that they hadn’t initiated the encounter, she had.
It pissed her off but she didn’t mind so much. It kept the felines from hitting on her, and feline men could be extremely arrogant, self-centered, and stubborn. They felt they were the cat’s meow whether they were or weren’t. The women could be vain, selfish, and too absorbed in material things. She didn’t subscribe to any of that. Plain, simple and easy. No fuss and no muss and no complications of any kind was her motto, and she lived by that. To her, the young dragons were a complication, and a whole lot of fuss and muss. For one thing, they were young, in their early twenties, and far too good-looking for their own good.
She had no desire to be a notch on their bedposts or something to brag about. The division between dragons and tigers may have ended in a pact but that didn’t mean she had to trust them. Especially when they came in such delicious looking packages. It didn’t help that her cat Whisper loved to be around them—always rubbing up against them, purring loudly when any of them was near—and could always be found on their laps getting a good rub down or a scratch behind her ears. Slut, she thought. If Louisa didn’t know any better, she’d think her cat was trying to match her up with one of the dragons. Whisper didn’t act that way about anyone else, that was for sure.
Her boss, Rune, even commented on Whisper’s attachment to the trio. A soft meow came out of the darkness. The overly fluffy Persian padded toward her. The bottlebrush tail swished back and forth. Her large blue eyes blinked at up her mistress, an expression of contentment on her face. “You ready for the New Year, Whis? You’ll get an extra bit of tuna tonight.”
“Merow?” Whisper sat down. Her tail continued to sweep across the floor. She seemed to know words like tuna, treats, and nap but things like no didn’t seem to make a dent in her kitty brain. Just like a feline, Louisa mused. “Yes, tuna. And no, the trio isn’t here to give you extra treats. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re after.”
“Merow?” Whisper blinked up at her, innocence in her gaze.
Louisa rolled her eyes. “Don’t try to play the innocent. I know you try to get into the catnip when I’m not looking. Anyway, you’ll get extra tuna and some extra petting too. I’ll even make a fire so you can stretch out in front of it. You’ll like that, won’t you?”
Whisper got up and brushed against her in a sinuous glide of fur against denim. A loud purr drifted up to let her know the kitty was satisfied.
After a glance around, she saw there was nothing else to do but blow out the candles. The soft, dim glow had added a lovely, romantic, intimate feel earlier in the night when they’d served an early dinner to parties on their way to other festivities. Now the bar was empty. Louisa didn’t want to leave. She had all the champagne she would need, there was a TV, she had snacks from the kitchen, and her e-reader was in her purse. All she needed was someone to smooch, and the night would be perfect. Spending the night at work wouldn’t exactly be anyone’s ideal for New Year’s Eve, but she didn’t want to return to an empty house. Not again, anyway.
Her thoughts turned to the Triple Heat boys. At least that was what she called them. Usually she avoided even looking at anyone younger than herself. She wasn’t exactly young at thirty-five, but she’d always thought that she’d be married or in a serious relationship by thirty. Work and going back to college to study business management had kept her busy and her nights filled with homework and work schedules. Now that most of that was over, she was alone with only a cat to call company. It was by no means a bad thing but around this time of year, with Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day all coming one after another, she really did feel how alone she was. Especially Valentine’s Day. Glowering over the upcoming Cupid-friendly, couples atmosphere that would sweep through the town, she threw the cloth under the bar and made sure everything was as it should be.
Again, Tor, Brent, and Fletch came up. Her body heated and began to hum with arousal. She thought back to nights when sensual dreams of having one or all of the men haunted her. Fantasies of a ménage plagued her waking days as well. Sometimes when she glanced over at them and caught their eyes, a flash of a heated kiss or a little groping in a storeroom, or something more with one or more of them. It took an embarrassing encounter or her boss, Rune, jolting her out of her daydream for her to refocus.
Shaking her head, she shoved back any thought of the trio and all the naughty and corrupt things she’d like to do to them and turned her attention to performing the end of the night clean up. “Besides, just because they wink at you or flirt a bit doesn’t mean they want you,” she grumbled to herself. “I’m older and in no way shape or form going to morph into Scarlett anytime soon. So might as well read about scorching hot sex.”
“Merow?” Whisper responded.
She shook her head. “You don’t care. You just want treats.” With a chuckle, Louisa turned away and headed toward the last of the tables to finish the cleanup.
Explosions burst from outside, casting pink, yellow, blue, and green shadows through the window. The sounds of parties and cheering joined the fireworks. She glanced toward the front of the bar and saw a few shadows drift past. Shifters in their animal forms could be seen. A small smile curled her lips. Her inner tigress watched the reveler with interest.
A sound from the kitchen drew her attention. Her ears prickled as voices reached her. Tension flooded her body as she strained to listen. She crept forward and continued to listen. The tigress hissed and stood up in her cage, ready to act if her human counterpart didn’t.
A soft mewl from over her shoulder made her stop and glance back at Whisper. The Persian darted under a booth chair to hide. Satisfied her pet wouldn’t be in danger, she moved toward the kitchen, listening to the voices increase in volume.
She called on her inner tiger for a partial shift, her nails turned into thin daggers. Her body was hot and primed to pounce and transform. The tiger’s power increased inside her, the pressure growing as energy glided along her muscles and tendons. A dull ache throbbed through her arms, legs, and torso. Her hands shook as she held back the full power of the tiger. Until she was sure the intruders were a threat she wasn’t going to go full tigress on them.

Excerpt:

I curse you, William Moore. By the moon and the stars. By the elements of life. Your body shall know the meaning of emptiness. Your soul shall be tied to these walls. You will hunger and thirst for nothing. Here on this land you shall remain until you know the meaning of love.” Irena hissed again. “I curse you, William Moore, for your insensitivity, your callousness and inconsideration. You will be tied to this house, never to leave it as you so clearly wish not to. I curse you, William Moore, until you find true love.”

Fire blazed through William’s body. His back bowed and his mouth opened on a silent scream. He writhed on the bed while Irena’s magic burst through him. His bones were melting, muscles being stretched taut. His heart was threatening to beat out of his chest, and pain shot through his brain, almost as if it was about to explode. He couldn’t think, breathe or move. Time passed lazily, yet swiftly at the same time. Squeezing his eyes shut, he prayed to whatever gods would listen, pleading with them to make it all stop.

Finally the fire ceased and a burst of cold shot through him. Shivering and weak, he eased his body back onto the mattress. He opened his eyes. At first the room seemed bleary, but after a moment his vision began to clear. The room appeared the same. The soft red-orange glow of the fire danced on the ceiling, the lingering scent of sex and perfume hung in the air. Turning his head slowly, ignoring the pain, he saw that the furniture looked the same–at least the items in his vision were.

He hissed when he felt the muscles in his legs jump. His stomach flipped and he moaned. He slid his arms around his abdomen and rolled over, groaning as he went. Pain wracked his body as his head began to pound again. As his body began to calm down, he rolled onto his back, panting. His eyelids felt heavy as exhaustion took hold. He tried to grasp at consciousness but it eluded him. After what seemed like an eternity of fighting, finally he drifted off to sleep. Night became day and then back to night.

The moon rose high above the trees that surrounded the house. William awoke with a start and, looking around, he tried to place the room he lay in. He had dreamed that he’d been floating over his body and throughout the house. He had watched the day pass, levitating and observing normal life as it rolled on. Now awake, he rolled out of bed, the pain in his body had ceased. He felt solid enough. Rising, he walked over to a set of double doors and undid the latch. Pushing them open, he breathed in the night air. He strode out onto the balcony and surveyed his property. Closing his eyes, he began to move haltingly, controlling his movements and breathing as he started his tai chi exercise. He let the concerns of his life float away.

In the distance he heard the door downstairs open and footsteps pounding their way up the stairs. His assistant’s voice called out to him, “Hey, Will! Willll? I have some papers for you to sign that the publisher needs ASAP.”

The door to his bedroom banged against the wall, followed by a gasp. “Oh, my God!”

The horrified words were followed by loud thuds, thumps and a clatter of something metallic falling on the wooden floor. Frowning, William pivoted and entered the room, his mouth open ready to ask what was wrong, when he saw the reason for Maggie’s shock. There on the bed, lay his naked body. It took him a few seconds to comprehend everything he saw.

Once it had sunk in, he dashed toward Maggie and started shouting at her. “I’m right here! Maggie, I’m right behind you!” He reached out to touch her on the shoulder, and watched in horror as his hand slipped right through her. He held his hand before his face, it seemed solid enough. He tried again, and the same thing happened.

Deciding to deal with that later, he tried talking to her. “Maggie, I’m right here. Maggie.”

How about Vampires for Halloween?

Writing Trapped was so much fun. I wanted to write a story where the hero had to pursue the heroine and fight for her, to convince her of his true affections. Rysen and Kit were so much fun to write for and I would love to write for them again. Rysen is such a naughty vampire with a dirty mind.

“I felt your anger and insecurity. I had to come see for myself.”

She tried to jerk her arm away from his grip, but he refused to let go. “You’re aroused, my darling. You’re aroused by me.”

“Go to hell.” She refused to tell him just how aroused he was making her.

“Been there, got the T-shirt. Do you need help dressing?”

“No, let go of me.”

“So you can sway on your feet and fall over? I think not. Allow me to support you.”

“Pervert. You just want to watch me get dressed.”

“That is quite true. I am a pervert. You bring out the letch in me. I want nothing more than to watch you bend over as you put on your jeans. I want see that sweet ass exposed to my gaze. I long to part those deliciously rounded cheeks, fall to my knees, and lap at your anus until you become aroused, your pussy dripping with need for my cock. I want to tease you until you squirm against me, urging me to fuck you long, hard, and deep. I want you to admit you want my cock up your ass, in your pussy, and in your mouth. So yes, darling, I am a pervert.”

She shivered at his words, each syllable causing her aching channel to clench with need, gushing more cream. Her clit throbbed as her nipples tightened even further.

“I want to watch you put on your tank top. See those delicious nipples of yours pressed against the thin fabric of your shirt. I want to take those nipples in my mouth and suck on them while my fingers sink into your pussy, feel your juices slip over my hand and down my forearm. I want to finger fuck you until you come all over my hand, until the air is heavy and pungent with the scent of your sex.”

The image inflamed her. She wanted what he was saying so badly. Her cunt clenched with need. She felt the beginnings of an orgasm tightening, curling, writhing within her. She tried to control it, stop it, but it only twisted tighter, increasing the ache and fire between her legs.

“After that, I want to throw you against the wall and sink into you, balls deep. I want nothing between us, my darling. I want to feel your pussy spasm around me each time I slam into you. I want your legs wrapped around my waist, my hands holding your wrists up high over your head as I fuck you. I want to sink my fangs into your throat as I pound your pussy. I want to feel you come all over my cock, your cream slipping down my balls, over my thighs, and then I want to come inside you. I want to pump every last drop of my seed into you. I want to fuck you until my scent is rubbed into your skin. Yes, my darling, I am a letch. I am a pervert. For you, I will be all that and so much more. Don’t think for a second that once I have you, I won’t possess you, fuck you in private and in front of everyone. I want everyone to know who you belong to. Everyone.”

Excerpt:

The barman came over, smiling at her. “Another one for the road, lass?”

“Nope, I’m done for the day. How much –” She was stopped when he held up his hand.

“Already taken care of, love.” He nodded his head toward the man at her side. She rolled her eyes and sighed. Turning on her stool, she looked at him. His smile said it all. He thought he was going to get rewarded for his thoughtfulness. Not tonight, pal, she thought.

“I’m not going to sleep with you, give you a blow job or a hand job just because you bought me a drink. It was your money you wasted. Now if you’ll excuse me, thank you and good night.” She turned all the way around and hopped off the stool, hating the fact that she was only five foot three inches, and she had to jump down. Her booted heels clunked on the old wooden floor.

She just made it beyond the threshold when she felt a hand wrap around her wrist and jerk her back. Her spine hit the wall and two hands framed her head. His face was a contrast to the darkness of the entryway. “First, I never asked you to pay me back. Nor did I ask you to sleep with me, or give me a blow job or a hand job. I’d have loved for you to offer, but I didn’t ask. So don’t assume you know anything about me just because I buy you a drink.”

She was speechless.

“I did kiss you, not because of the drink, but because I wanted to, and besides, you were staring at my kilt. You were wondering if it’s true what they say, weren’t you? I can tell you with great certainty that it’s all true,” he murmured as his lips brushed hers.

Maybe two Dragons are what you need to fire up your holiday?

Halloween Heat II coverI wanted to write a story for the fantasy mentioned in Dragon Ugly. I didn’t have time or room to write it but I knew that Brent would want to fulfill his mate Carissa’s desire to have sexy in a bookstore. I loved revisiting this couple and I can’t wait to write Fletch’s  story. I even know his heroine and his story.

Excerpt:

Carissa’s heart thudded against her ribcage as she allowed Brent to guide her past the shops declaring Halloween and Samhain sales and discounts. Children dressed up in various costumes rushed past them, chased by harried parents. None of that really registered. Brent’s solid, roughened palm against hers, the heat rolling off his body in waves, the aura of sexual determination and arousal coming from him wrapped around her. Her own desire pulsed between her thighs; her nipples tightened and ached for his touch. He’d dressed her tonight in a sleeveless French maid costume with crotchless panties and no bra. Cool night air brushed against her overheated sex, teasing her throbbing clit.

Fletch trailed behind them in a Zorro costume, complete with cape and mask. Brent had decided that the Highwayman costume was more to his liking, complete with a cape and mask of his own. Both men looked dashing and dangerous. A thrill raced down her spine as she glanced back at Fletch, who’d decided to go the scruffy route with a bit a coppery colored beard on his jaw. Brent’s darker five o’clock shadow made him look just as fierce. He had insisted that during the fantasy her wrists would be bound behind her back and she would be blindfolded so she wouldn’t know who was doing what. Carissa hadn’t thought that far for her fantasy, all she’d known was she wanted to fuck in a bookstore. Brent had taken it to a whole new level.

She’d even overheard them talking of using nipple clamps to help increase her pleasure. None of that mattered as much as being with the man she loved, her mate. Her wolf was just happy for a change in scenery. At the end of the night, when the clock struck Midnight, they would all shift, Brent and Fletch into dragons and Carissa into a wolf. According to Brent’s parents, it was a way to welcome Samhain in your purest form. New place to explore, and a new experience to add to the ones that Brent had brought into her once boring life.

They continued on down the block, passing more kids and parents and dodging late night drunks who were leaning on each other for support as they walked down the sidewalk. The air was filled with softness and anticipation, as if the world was holding its breath for the Witch’s New Year, when the veil between man and the dead was the thinnest. Or in this case, when the veil between mortals and the paranormal blended together to become one.

Tension shivered along her muscles as her arousal and excitement blended together. She hid her eagerness to act out this fantasy and move on to the next. Brent led the way, and she rushed to catch up with him.

“Whoa there, lover,” Carissa called out. “We have time, there’s no rush.”

Excerpt:

The sweetest perfume drifted under his door. He snorted and sat up. She was near. His eyes had already adjusted to the darkness. He saw a shadow move in front of his door but it didn’t go to the guest room across the hall. He waited; the seconds ticked by. Each moment like a drip of water on his face, it seemed to last forever and there was no end in sight. He swallowed. His lips became dry as his heartbeat sped up. The jangle of a hand on the door handle rang in his ears. The delicate shells prickled at the musical sound. He waited. His heart stuttered and then crashed against his ribcage in a heavy drum beat. His body heat spiked as his wolf waited. Need coiled in the pit of his stomach. He licked his lips again, hoping, praying for what, he didn’t know. All he saw was that if she didn’t do something soon, he would. And then there would be no turning back. Everything would change for them, and he wasn’t sure how everyone would react or how everything would land.

As the seconds ticked by, her shadow remained at the door. The hand had stopped jiggling. Opening up his senses, he allowed her emotions to wash over him. He tasted the tang of hesitation with the sweetness of eagerness. All of it was tinged with the bright spice of lust. Underneath it all, there was Isy’s own unique natural scent. Not wanting to let the torture for both of them continue, he called out, “Isy, you can come in.”

The town around them was dressed in its fall colors, deep reds, bright golds, rich browns and even a few green leaves still decorated the trees. Cinnamon, cloves, pumpkin and incense wove through the cool breeze that brought goose bumps to her bare arms and legs. She tugged at her skirt, wishing it were a little longer and that she’d been allowed to wear stockings. Brent had said that stockings or even thigh highs would have gotten in the way. So she dressed in the costume Brent had provided for her and followed him and Fletch out the door with kisses and winks from Brent’s mom and dad.
“If you wanted to take me on a pleasure tour of your hometown, you couldn’t have done it during the day and allowed me to wear more comfortable shoes?” The five-inch peep toe stilettos weren’t doing her feet any favors on the cobblestone sidewalks.
“Sorry, I should have warned you.” Brent pulled her toward him and gave her a kiss on her temple. “The bookstore is in the more secluded part of town.”
“The Red Light district,” Fletch leered.
“Sex, sex, sex, that’s all you think about,” she teased back.
“Well, when you’ve got a sexy girlfriend like I have, that’s all you can concentrate on.” Brent stopped and pulled her in a for a long slow kiss.

Excerpt:

With a grin, he dove into the ice-cold water and felt the pleasant shock reverberate through his body. After a length underneath, his lungs began to burn from a need for oxygen. He swam up to the surface, taking in a lungful of sweet air. The dragon exhaled a cold breath, chilling his body further as the beast settled into its element.

The sun wasn’t high in the sky yet and there was no movement on the streets. The tourists had been living it up ever since they had arrived. Brent couldn’t keep up with all the events that were planned around town, and he didn’t even want to. There were beautiful women everywhere he looked, as if it were ladies night all the time. It was enough to put a smile on the lips of any man. But it just made Brent feel tired.

Now that he had adjusted to the water temperature, heat surged through Brent’s body, and he felt the dragon pushing him to shift. He dove under the surface again, as gills split along his neck in searing stripes of pain. Webs glued his fingers and toes together by thin membranes. He opened his eyes and took in the dark blue tiles and the bright white flooring of the pool. Oxygen flooded his lungs. He breathed in the chilly water and blew out bubbles. Flipping onto his back he gazed up at the shifting surface of the water. Beyond, the world moved in and out of focus. He saw a flock of birds fly overhead and the plants waving to and fro around the pool. Sounds were dampened under the water. It was peaceful.

He tried to let go of the tension and the stress that had been filling him lately, but it seemed that his dragon had something on its mind.

“When will we find our mate?” The dragon’s question surprised him. It whispered through his mind like scales brushing against the inside of his skull. He hadn’t even realized that his dragon had been looking for a mate.

“Are you looking for someone for now or forever?” he asked. The answer was important. He had to be sure this was what the dragon really wanted.

“Not temporary,” it whispered. “Always.”

Brent felt relief sweep through him. So that was it! But the relief was quickly followed by worry. They were still young in human years, not even twenty-five yet. He had a job, but he wasn’t even sure if he wanted to continue working at the Dragon’s Lair. His future seemed up in the air.

He tried to push away these thoughts and focus on what the dragon wanted: a mate. He thought of Tor and Louisa. Once they’d been mated at New Year, they had seemed to exist in their own little world, so cozy and close. Tor stayed over at her place practically every night unless she needed some alone time. A pang of envy burst in Brent’s stomach.

The more he thought about the idea of a mate, the more it appealed to him. Part of him wanted someone for himself. He wouldn’t be opposed to sharing with his friends from time-to-time, but when all was said and done, she would be all his. But another part of him was scared. What if there wasn’t anyone for them? What if she wasn’t out there? What would he do then? How would his dragon react to that? It had happened before—dragons searching the world over and not finding anyone. It was a sad and pitiful existence. Some thought it was punishment for past deeds, but Brent didn’t like to think that. Not even the coldest bastard deserved to be alone. Brent suddenly yearned to experience that first blush of love and contentment, to feel what it would be like to love and have that love returned.

“When?” The dragon pressed.

“I don’t know,” he told it. How should he go about finding her? A dragon matchmaker? A witch? Or should he rely on pure luck and fate?

“She’s here, in town,” the dragon pressed. “I can feel her.”

Brent almost changed back to his human form from shock. He hadn’t felt anything unusual, but then again his senses had been bombarded by so many things as of late. The fact that the dragon had been keeping this from him sent a wave of scalding heat through his body. The dragon had watched him fumble through one encounter after another, each less satisfying than the last. Why hadn’t it just told him it wanted a mate? “What do you mean?”

The dragon hissed out a cool stream of mist, interrupting his thoughts and pulling his focus back to the beast. “You must clear your senses. Use mine.”

Brent didn’t know how to open himself up to the dragon without undergoing a full shift. He felt his frustration mounting. The ability to share senses was supposed to be fluid and effortless, and yet it seemed to be all or nothing with his dragon.

“Stop. Let it go and relax. Think about our mate,” the dragon urged.

“Easy for you to say,” Brent muttered. How was he supposed to do that if he didn’t know anything about his mate?

He floated up to the surface and closed his eyes, letting the gentle lapping of the water center him. His limbs went limp and he sank down again, letting the soothing waters envelop him. Brent tried to picture his ideal woman, or at least an outline of her. A woman with curves, and a healthy appetite. A woman who was intelligent, strong, capable, independent, and full of respect for herself. Just thinking on those qualities made Brent’s heart ache. His frustration with his life grew as he thought of all that he yearned for. He missed having someone to spend time with, to cuddle with. He missed the basic human contact and comfort that he could find in a relationship. He wanted to be able to wake up with someone, make them breakfast, go out on dates, and spend the evenings talking about their days.

“Yes,” the dragon hissed. “Think on that.”

Brent’s body became buoyant, and once again he floated with ease.

Now he tells me, Brent thought. In his mind’s eye he could see the faint hint of clear, chocolate-brown skin, and light brown eyes. A cool breeze drifted over him, raising goose bumps. He inhaled deeply. The scent of the forest wafted past his nose. They were nowhere near the woods. With another pull of air, he got the scent of a million different perfumes, some herbal, some floral, and some spicy. Heat churned in his gut as his balls hardened. Arousal traced a fiery path along his spine. Shock reverberated through his system at the sudden onslaught of pure, unadulterated need. It had been a long time since he’d had a taste of real, honest-to-gods desire, and he didn’t even know who it was that his body wanted.

He tried to sense something of her personality beyond her multitude of scents. The imaginary woman imbued him with warmth and comfort, a coziness with the spice of sexual excitement that only increased his need for her. He felt his cock thicken, filling with blood as his body temperature spiked. Brent tried to push past the feeling and concentrate on locating the woman. It was one thing for the sexual chemistry to be there, but to be able to stay with someone, he would need to forge a real connection to her. With a mental shove, he tried to open himself up to her more, get more of a feel for who she was.

He hit a wall, hard, and bounced back. All sense of her vanished and the outline of her image wavered, then disappeared. He pushed again, trying to seek out that thread that connected them. He gritted his teeth as he tried to force himself past the wall. Brent pictured his energy like a large wave of water as it crashed against the solidity of her barriers again and again. He tried to reform the water’s shape to something sharper, like a sword or icicle, but again he was blocked.

Confusion turned to anger and determination. I’m going to get to you, he thought. You will be mine.

Another Small Update

Another small update. I’ve requested and received the rights back to my books Hades Helmet Crew: Carnevale and Mating Fever. The latter book was part of the charity antho Firestorm. I’ll be looking over Mating Fever and deciding if I want to lengthen it or re-releasing it as is.

Please bear with me during this process and thank you for all your support. More news to come.

Also, I’ve just signed a contract with Etopia Press for a Halloween Quickie set in the Dragon New Year World. The story is called Dragons at Samhain. I’m so excited.

Updates

Happy September!

So here’s some updates. I’ve finished Dragon Ugly (a menage) the second in the Dragon New Year series and have turned that into my editor. I’ve also turned in the genie story that I’ve had on backburner for over two years. And I’ve turned in a Halloween Quickie (a menage) to Etopia Press. This month I hope to finally finish my next Draven Crossings book, the first in my Bachelor Auction series and do some revisions on the stories that I’ve taken back, such as add up to 15k to With His Mind. You’ll be getting more news about some stories and their rights later on in the week, hopefully it’ll be good news.

This month I’ll be appear at:

Sept 12th- Talking Two Lips Yahoo Group

Sept 15th- Love Romance Club Yahoo Group

Sept 30th- Etopia Chat at LRC Yahoo Group

And this month’s pick for the Offerings Book Club, in honor of Cynnara Tregarth’s birthday is:

Holding The Cards by Joey W. Hill!

I’ll also be trying to convince Cynnie to do a BDSM workshop for the Group. And I’m mulling over a few other workshops for the month.

My foray into self-pub has been put on hold. I’ve learned that I can’t bounce back as quickly as I used to when I accomplish finishing two books back to back. So, I have to, much to my annoyance, take it slow and take my time. Not that great an idea when your brain keeps dumping plot bunnies in your lap.

What I’m reading for this month on Bertha (my Nook):

Holding the Cards by Joey W. Hill

Kim by Rudyard Kipling

Letting off Steam by Sahara Kelly

Menage on a Train by Alice Gaines

Crazy in the Blood by Lucienne Driver

Napoleon’s Pyramids by William Dietrich

A long list, I know, but I’m almost done with Kim and Menage on Train. :-). So whats on your reading list? Authors what are you working on? I do need more books to read and I see that Lissa Matthews and Miranda Baker have new books coming soon. *Grins* As well as Rhian Cahill. New yummies to read. 🙂

Until Next Time!

Food Fun from a Non-Foodie by Tara Lain

Food Fun from a Non-Foodie

I’m delighted to be here with Se celebrating the release of my new novel, Genetic Celebrity. This book is a MMF ménage that takes place in the world of supermodels, and it also includes a ton of food porn. Now this is ironic, because, unlike Se, I am not a foodie. In fact, I’m the direct opposite. For the most part, food is only interesting to me as an opportunity for socializing and conversation. I love breakfast because I really like eggs. But beyond that, I get excited over a Starbucks chai latte.

My favorite non-foodie story harkens back to when I was in my early 20s. I had a great apartment just outside Washington, D.C. My mom came to visit me for the weekend and arrived while I was still at work. She thought she’d surprise me by cooking dinner. My apartment had a nice kitchen. She let herself into the apartment, opened my refrigerator and found a bottle of champagne, a jar of mustard, and an orchid. Needless to say, she had some shopping to do. During that same period, I had some friends come to visit me from Germany. I wanted to cook fried chicken. I had to call my mother to ask for every step of the process. And I had to go out and buy the ingredients — including the salt and pepper.

I’m a little better now. I even had a short gourmet cook period in my life. But I know a lot about food, having been surrounded by great cooks, and I called upon their spirits in writing Genetic Celebrity. In the story, my hero Tommy Riley is an amateur gourmet cook. Even though he’s been attracted to men most of his life, he has a mad passion for an older, gorgeous female modeling agent. But she only seems to love him for his food. The his boss brings home a beautiful, androgynous street kid who he wants to turn into a supermodel. Tommy is attracted to him too. Yep, it’s a ménage with Food Porn!!  To get into their passions for food, I drew on the things I know and love — whipped cream, strawberries, and, of course, champagne. What foods do you consider sexy?

Excerp ADULT: Genetic Celebrity by Tara Lain; MMF Menage with Food!

Available at Loose Id  Amazon

Tommy Riley loves cooking and the simple life. But his passion for Angie “Booky” Edelson is anything but simple. Beautiful, ambitious, hard-driving and 10 years older than Tommy, Booky represents all the things Tommy has tried to leave behind. Besides, she only seems to love him for his food! Then Tommy’s boss brings home Shay Shaleen, a pierced, tattooed, androgynous street kid for Booky to turn into a top male model. Tommy sizzles for the beautiful guy but Shay gets caught up in the flattery of a famous fashion designer. Why does Tommy have to fall for two people who can’t love him back? Is there a recipe for blending with these genetic celebrities?

What an embarrassing few hours. All the kid had to do was raise an eyebrow, and Tommy’s cock stood up and said howdy. He’d spent three hours with Booky and two hours with Shay, and he felt like his damned penis had been doing jumping jacks, warming up, but it never got to play in the big game. It was bouncing around, yelling, “Put me in, coach.” He chuckled. Maybe the problem was his biggest athletic achievement had been in chess. And right now he needed an attack on his queen. He rolled over to the nightstand and pulled out his lube.

A quick squirt. He reached down and pulled the pajama bottoms below his half-hard cock. Just thinking about that guy lying across the hall in the guest bed was turning him on. He sighed, rubbed the lube on his hands, then stopped. What did this all mean? As a young kid he’d shown all the usual interest in little girls, talking them into pulling down their panties and all that. Then in high school he’d discovered guys, but the girl thing never really went away. Which had been good because he could date girls and have sex even while he was lusting after the only guy in the tournament who could beat him in chess.

He’d had the biggest hard-on for Damien. Then on the day that Tommy had finally beaten him with a kingside strategy, Damien had pulled him into a stall in the men’s room and kissed him. Je-sus. Tommy ripped the guy’s pants off and had his big cock in Damien’s ass before he could cry surrender. They’d fucked desperately for fear somebody was going to come into the bathroom. At one point someone had come through the door, and Damien had jumped up on the toilet so no one could see his feet. Tommy stood there sucking Damien’s cock quietly while the visitor peed outside in the urinal. Jeez, that had been fun. Of course, later they’d been discovered by his father while making out in Tommy’s bedroom. Talk about shit hitting fans.

This was the wrong time to think about that. He reached for his cock and paused. Damn, he should call Booky before it got any later and get her over here tomorrow. He looked at his lube-covered hand, then reached for the phone with his dry one. No reason to waste time or lube. He hit the speed dial with his thumb.

He heard the ringing. “Hey, Tommy. What’s up, baby?”

That husky voice vibrated through his ear and dived straight to his cock. He grabbed the dick as it stretched. “Hi, Book. Uh, can you come over tomorrow?” Oh yes, just one little squeeze.

“Sure, what’s going on?”

“Ummm, Roan has a special project for you.” He clicked on to speaker so he could use both hands.

One hand after the other with a twist at the top the way he liked.

“Oh, that’s great.” She sounded happy. His balls liked that. “What’s the project?”

“It’s, uh, uh, kind of a surprise.” Stroke, stroke.

“I love surprises.” He’d like to surprise her. “But come on, bubala, give me a hint.”

“No hints.” Stroke. Stroke. Stroke.

“Tommy Riley, don’t be mean. Tell me.” Oh God, that voice. He pictured the lips the voice was coming from. Had to control his panting.

“No, no, can’t tell. Sorry, Book, have to go. I…uh, have something in the oven.”

“At this hour?”

“Yeah, and it’s getting too hot.”

“Okay, what time shall I come?”

“Come? Oh yes, come. Come at nine thirty for breakfast. Come. Okay?”

“Okay.” She sounded suspicious.

“See you tomorrow.” Stroke, stroke. He clicked off, threw the phone on the bed, rose up on his knees, and got serious. While he was at it, he might as well get off on some more fantasies.

Imagine fucking Shay Shaleen. Those long legs stretched over his pretty head, Tommy hammering his ass. Yesss. And shoving his big, thick dick into Booky. Making her scream his name over and over. Oh, that was so good. Into Shay. Into Booky. Shay. Booky. Fucking them both. Wow. Stroke, stroke, stroke. She-it! Spunk shot out of his dick and landed on the top of the sheets while flashes of heat seared through his balls and into his head.

“Jeez. Yes!” He gasped and took deep breaths. His muscles relaxed. He’d clean the sheets tomorrow. Sleep now. Shay and Booky. I wish.

Tara Lain never met a beautiful boy she didn’t love – at least on paper. A writer of erotic romance, mostly ménage and male/male, Tara loves all her characters, but especially her handsome heroes. A lifelong writer of serious non-fiction, Tara only fell in love with EROM in 2009 and, through perseverance and lots of workshops, had the first novel she ever wrote published in January of 2011. Then she capped off the year by being voted Best Author of 2011 in the LRC Awards and had her Genetic Attraction Series named runner-up for Best Series of 2011! A very good year. After an exotic life of travel all over the world and work in television, education and advertising, Tara settled in Southern California with her soul-mate husband and opened her own small marketing business. She paints, collages, and started practicing yoga “way before it was fashionable”. Passionate about diversity, justice, inclusion and new ideas, she says on her tombstone it will read, “Yes”.

Guest Blogger- Tara Lain

Over the last six months, I’ve had the pleasure of becoming friends with Selena Illyria. As you, her readers, know, she is a delightful wild woman full of music, mischief and great recipes. Se has been a blessing in my life and huge help to me as a writer. In fact, the book that I am announcing today from Etopia Press called Volley Balls is all her doing! Last February, Se Skyped me and asked if I’d like to write a book in 30 days (did I say she was a friend?!) The book was to be a part of an anthology with Selena and a number of other terrific writers. Now, I’m a relatively new fiction author (my first book, Genetic Attraction just came out in January of 2011 and the second, The Scientist and the Supermodel, released on May 31) so being invited to participate in an anthology was an honor. Plus, that wicked Selena sent me this video ad for Aussie Bums swim trunks as an inspiration and I melted on the spot. But 30 days? I had written a book in a month as part of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) so I knew I could do it and this was a short book. Less than 30 days later I turned in the completed manuscript all shiny to Etopia, they accepted it for contract and here it is releasing today.
Funny how stuff works. This little book has become a huge favorite of mine. First, I adore my hero, David Underwood. You still don’t see a lot of flamboyantly gay characters in books, but David is one of them. He may be a bit effeminate, but he’s a tiger fighting for what he believes in. And my other boys are the hunkiest of Aussie volleyball players (thanks to Se’s inspiration!) so you alpha lovers have nothing to worry about. The book has some serious themes, but it’s still a summer romance set in one of my favorite towns in the world – Laguna Beach, CA. So here it is. A nibble of Volley Balls. The book that asks the question “can a gay boy from Laguna find happiness with an alpha male … or two?”
And you can WIN this book if you’d like to participate in the Hot Sizzling Summer blog tour contest. Here are the rules:

Comment on this blog and leave your email address. I will copy it and enter it in the drawing for the copy of Volley Balls being given away next Saturday. You’ll be notified by email if you win. Comment and email, simple.

Here’s MORE CHANCES TO WIN! (more complicated so read closely LOL)
• Go to my Book blog http://beautifulboysbooks.blogspot.com. Leave a comment and follow the blog (if you already do follow, it counts). You will be entered in EVERY drawing until the end of the month. One book will be given away every week and you’ll be entered in all those drawings.
• Go to each blog on my blog tour and leave a comment on the day of the post (or at least in the same week) and you will be entered again for each additional comment during the week in which the post is made.
• The entire blog tour is listed on my website http://www.taralain.com/blog_tour_schedule.html and updates will be posted regularly so check it out. There will also be Yahoo Group chats where I will be giving away other books so watch for those!

Excerpt ADULT: Volley Balls by Tara Lain M/M/M Menage Contemporary

AVAILABLE NOW from Etopia Press http://www.etopia-press.net/

David Underwood needs to go to AA – Alpha-lovers Anonymous, but his ogling of two Australian volleyball players on Laguna Beach gets him harassed and terrified he might be in for a repeat of his previous abusive relationship. Australian, Gareth Marshall needs to come out. A lifetime of hiding his orientation from his best friend and volleyball partner, Edge, as well as everyone else around him, has left him hurt and frustrated. When Gareth gets a load of David posing nude as the Micheangelo statue in the famous Laguna Pageant, he knows his hiding days are numbered. But Edge has his own secrets, and may just take them out on the two lovers. And David’s ex-lover has some nasty plans of his own. With everything stacked against them, can a flaming gay Laguna boy find happiness with an alpha male – or two?

Gareth picked a book from a back shelf and flipped through it. “Wow. Japanese porn.”
David glanced and laughed. “Actually, it’s Japanese shunga prints. It was a medieval art form. The Japanese don’t think of erotica like we do, so it’s not really pornographic.”
“But these blokes are hung.”
“Yes. It’s characteristic of the form. No one knows why exactly.”
“Bloody hell, these are hot. Wish they had some of two guys together.”
“They do, actually. It’s hard to tell in some cases because the men are often adolescent boys who dress more like women. In Japan, people were seldom considered homosexual. Only acts were described as such.”
“Yeah. I found one. Oh, shit, this is so hot.” David felt a strong arm wrap around his waist. Gareth pulled David back against a rock-hard cock covered by denim. He leaned hard against David and stuck the book in front of David’s face. “Look at that, love.”
Oh yeah, David hardly had to be reminded. He’d used that very book to jerk off a few times in the bathroom, being very careful not to get cum on the pages. “Yeah, I know. I love that book.”
“Oh, have you been a very bad boy with this book?”
“Yes.”
Gareth breathed hot in his ear. “And where would that have been?”
“In the back bathroom.”
“Oh, you naughty, naughty boy. I think I may spank you tonight for being so very bad.”
David moaned, while trying to keep his eyes on the front door and the few people passing by.
“But I don’t think I can wait ‘til tonight, you naughty boy.” Gareth set the book on the counter in front of David. “Just keep looking at this, love.”
The etching showed two young men, opulently dressed in kimonos, ministering to an older man’s enormous phallus with their tongues. Crap, it was so sexy. Gareth licked the shell of David’s ear. “I want you to know that I have been tested regularly and have a clean bill of health.”
David was gasping now as the thick ridge of cock pushed between his ass checks, still covered in skin-tight stretch denim. “Me, too. I’m clean.”
“Oh good, love, because I want to swallow.”
And before David could think, much less protest, Gareth was on his knees in front of him, back to the counter and pulling down David’s zipper. David kept staring toward the door with what he knew was a stupid grin on his face, as those rough fingers pulled his stiff cock out.
Then warm, wet heat surrounded him. “Oh shit, Gareth.” He forced himself to whisper when he wanted to shout.
He stared at the beautiful etching, then turned the page and saw the huge phallus of one man penetrating the asshole of another, younger man. Oh God, oh God.
“Hi, David.”
He looked up at the open front door of the shop to see one of his friends from the Laguna Art Museum waving as she walked by. Oh, don’t come in. He waved, hoping she couldn’t see his hand shaking.
She stuck her head in the door as Gareth’s mouth moved into serious vacuum mode while his big hand stroked David’s balls. She smiled. “How’s business, kiddo?”
“Uh, swell, uh, fine.” He pointed to the computer a little frantically. “Just doing some inventory.”

Writing the Ménage: A Special Dynamic by Tara Lain

Genetic Attraction is my first novel (although I’ve been writing nonfiction for many years). I decided to write it when I discovered erotic romance and loved the genre so much, I thought “I could write one of these books.” But Genetic Attraction didn’t start out to be a ménage a trois. When I first conceived the plot, I expected it to be an older woman/younger man romance, but then one day I ordered a book by Jet Mykles called Heaven. It was my first male/male romance and I was hooked! I had to add another man to my book.

Fortunately, ignorance is bliss. I didn’t know that writing a ménage is hard, so I just plunged in. Since this first novel, I’ve written three other books and two of them are ménages:– one is m/m/f and one is m/m/m/. I guess I really like this dynamic. Here’s what I’m learning:

  • Love between three people can be just as sweet and intense and passionate as between two– at least in romance novels! The real-life dynamics of a ménage are probably very tricky, but virtually everyone has harbored in their heart at sometime the thought that maybe, just maybe, they could love two people. Ménage stories play into this fantasy.
  • Ménages make interesting plots. Simple, you have three people to play with, to make interact with each other, to provide richness and detail to your story. In Genetic Attraction, two of my lead characters are scientists and one is a supermodel. As readers, we get to see scenes played out in their different worlds- in the lab, at photo shoots, at a faculty party.
  • Pronouns can be killers! Writing male/male stories is a unique challenge since both characters are called “he”, so you have to find ways to differentiate them without using their names constantly, and without being confusing. Now, add another man to the mix as I’m doing in my current work-in-progress, a m/m/m ménage. Yikes. It takes some creativity and very deep point-of-view for each character.
  • Sex between three people needs careful thought. The reader needs to know where each character is and what they’re doing. No one can be left out, so we need to see reactions from each character as well as actions.
  • But, oh, it’s soooo much fun. A ménage is fun to read and it’s fun to write. So many yummy things can be done simultaneously when you have three people. Just use your imagination. That’s what I did. : )

I want to thank Selena for being such a gracious host and for all her incredible help and support to this new author. And huge hugs to all the readers who have been sending me messages on e-mail and Twitter and in blog posts saying how much they enjoy the book and the excerpts. It makes me cry, guys. So tell me, what kind of romantic pairings or multiples do you most enjoy? You’ve got a bunch or writers listening who will be happy to give them to you!? : )

Excerpt:

“Em?”

Yikes! Damn, he got her again. The lab staff teased her for getting so absorbed in her work an ax murderer could sneak up on her.

She looked up from her computer at her favorite tall, blond ax murderer, a.k.a. research associate. The blue, blue eyes behind the Clark Kent wire rims sparkled with humor.

He chuckled. “Sorry, I tried to make a lot of noise opening your door.”

She sighed and pushed away from the big wooden desk that crowded her small office. Oh yeah, now she felt the exhaustion. “I was somewhere else, as usual.”

“Just wanted to know if you’d finished the gene sequencing?”

She looked up into that sculpted face and squinted at the pain between her eyebrows. “I got a lot done, but I’m seeing double.” Headache or not, she could see him just fine.

“C’mon, it’s after nine. Let’s give up before we have a thirty-two-gene sequence instead of sixteen.”

Ouch. Fourteen hours at a computer. She closed her eyes and stretched her neck to the side.

Strong, warm hands pressed down on her shoulders. His fingers pushed her head forward, and powerful thumbs dug into her neck. She jumped and then shivered.

“That’s where it hurts, right?” He dug in a little deeper.

Increased heart rate. Spiked respiration. She thought of it as the “Jake reaction.” The touch of those strong, young hands that he seemed to put on her body way too often and the warm smell of him always powered a reaction. Some tiny part of her rational scientist’s mind could watch while her body went wacko, tingling, shivering and yearning. She might be a thirty-six-year-old geneticist with a huge reputation to protect, but she wanted Jake Martin with a lust she couldn’t reason away. It was a crappy idea, the very worst for her sanity and her career, but those were the facts. Like the direct pathway of alcohol to the liver, nothing got in the way of her desire, not his youth, his position as her assistant researcher, or the fact that he lived with his girlfriend.

She pulled away from his hands. “We should go.”

His slight pause made her think she’d hurt him with her abruptness, but when she glanced up he smiled, flashing patentable dimples. “Let’s get something to eat.”

God, the cheekbones. The floppy gold hair. Half science geek, half demigod. He’d already stripped out of his lab coat, and the well-worn jeans hugged long, lean thighs. Resistance was futile. “Penne with sun-dried tomatoes?”

“You got it, sweetheart.” He pulled her out of the chair, a move that almost backed him up to her side wall. Space wasn’t a luxury afforded in this lab.

“Show proper respect there, boy child. That’s Doctor Sweetheart.”

“Then I’ll have to demand Doctor Boy Child.”

“Boy Child PhD?”

“Top of my résumé.” Jake leaned her against his chest — yeah, that would be rock-hard chest — and slipped the lab coat she wore on clinic days off her shoulders and threw it on her desk.

He just held her, his hands caressing her back as his breath rasped against her hair.

Damn, why did he do this? He touched her a lot, and she didn’t know if he simply didn’t realize how sexual his attentions seemed or if he was being sadistic. Wasn’t he getting enough at home?

She pulled back and practiced her motherly smile. “I must be tired.”

Gently turning her around, he pushed her toward the door, switching off the lights as they went. “Mama Sophia’s?”

Outside in the open lab, she shrugged on the green wool jacket he held for her. Computers still glowed on two desks where colleagues would return after dinner to continue work. She had a dedicated team, and she hated to leave, but eventually food and sleep even outweighed cancer research. She usually got here before seven, and food breaks were scarce. The thought of pasta made her mouth water as she watched Jake switch off the lights. “C’mon, Dr. Boy Child. Garlic is my drug of choice.”

* * * * *

“Okay, God is Italian.” The subtle flavor of tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil floated over her tongue.

“Yeah, just ask an Italian. He’ll tell you God gave them Sophia Loren and seventy-five-year-old prime ministers that still get it up for their twenty-five-year-old mistresses. Clearly, divine dispensation.” He sucked in a bite.

Mmm. Warm, oregano-spiced air, and the cinnamony smell of Jake beside her. Her favorites. “I thought that was all about the little blue pill?”

“Also a gift from the gods.”

They sat in their favorite red, faux-leather booth at the back of the homey restaurant complete with Chianti-bottle candles and red-checked tablecloths. Jake had taken off his leather jacket, leaving him in a soft, gray, tissue-thin sweater that hugged his beautiful lean torso. He’d pushed the sleeves up, and she tried not to stare at those corded golden forearms. The soft material of the sweater was almost as beautiful as his skin.

How did the man afford to dress that way on what she paid him? Never flashy, but even she could see the clothes had quality. He didn’t come from money, but he had just bought a house in what she’d heard was a very elegant neighborhood in Connecticut. Did his girlfriend have money? Damn, the girlfriend certainly had him.

“Am I finally going to meet your girlfriend on Friday?”

He made a quick grab for his water glass and took a sip, splashing a few drops on his glasses. “My girlfriend?”

Why was he being coy? “Yes, the girlfriend you moved in with, right? She must be curious about where you spend so many late nights. I assume you’re going to bring her Friday.”

He pulled his glasses off and wiped them on his napkin, looking tense. What was up? She reached out and flipped his shaggy hair from in front of those blue eyes. The man always needed a haircut. Another part of his charm.

“I, uh, wasn’t really planning on coming Friday night.”

Oh, hell no. “You are truly kidding me, Jake. You’ve got to know what that award means to us, to our research, if someone…you know, someone on our team…were to win it.” She didn’t want to spoil the surprise, but she’d hocked a lot of political capital lobbying for him to win the Belden Award. The prize for outstanding young scientist was a big deal to the university too, since all the major research schools from across the country were invited to submit candidates. Jeez, it’d never occurred to her that he’d just bow out of the ceremony. “Really, Jake, it’s important.”

He glanced at her, and then his pasta got interesting again.

“Okay, I’ll come.”

“Jesus, could you be more enthusiastic? You need to come, Jake. And you’ll bring your girlfriend, right? I want to meet her, and it will show the faculty council what a lovely, settled, family person you are. At least one of us isn’t a confirmed bachelor.”

He clenched his jaw and forced words out between his teeth. “Em, I’ll come to the banquet, but I haven’t got a girlfriend. And I sure as fuck can’t show the faculty council my happy family life.”

The girlfriend was gone? “What happened? You told me you just moved in with her.” Damn, she really didn’t want to screw with his life. “Jesus, Jake, is it because I’m working you to death? I’ll talk to her. Give you more time off.”

He held a hand to her lips. “Easy, sweetheart. I’m sorry. I haven’t told you the truth, but I just…crap, I don’t know. I should have told you a long time ago. I just wasn’t sure it would work, it was such a long shot.”

What in hell was he talking about?

She got the first direct stare since they sat down. “Em, I can’t bring my girlfriend to the award dinner…because she’s my boyfriend. The person I moved in with is a man.” He sat back, still gazing at her steadily, challengingly.

Every nerve ending went hot. Then cold. What the fuck?

“And for the record, I never said I moved in with my girlfriend. I said I moved in with my lover, and you did the rest. I’m sorry.”

She knew her mouth was hanging open. Jake, gay? Her fantasy lover? She didn’t know how to feel. As a kid in the commune, she and her mom had practically collected gay friends. How could she have missed it?

Jesus, she was shaking. She didn’t want him to think she was horrified. She wasn’t. Just shocked and…what? Disappointed? Now there was no chance for her.

“Jesus, Jake, I know I can be self-absorbed, but I didn’t know I was blind.” Okay, she had to get a grip. People were looking their way. She lowered her voice. “How could it never have crossed my mind that you’re gay? How could I have missed it so completely in almost two years of working together?”

“Em, I’m really sorry.”

He was sorry. Shit! “You didn’t think you could tell me? Did you imagine it would matter to me?”

He grabbed her hands and squeezed them. “No! Of course I didn’t think you’d care. I didn’t tell you I’m gay because, well, I’m not. Or wasn’t. I’ve mostly been with women. You know; you’ve seen me with enough of them. I’d only been with one other man in my life when I met Roan. We met less than a year ago at the genetics conference I attended with you.”

“That’s why you were acting so strangely at the conference?” She remembered how edgy and distracted he’d been.

“Yeah. I was face-to-face with my sexuality and with the best thing I’d ever seen.”

That put a little rip in her heart.

Releasing her hands, he gripped his own together. “But it was such an unlikely match, and the chances we’d stay together were so small, I didn’t want to tell you and then split up with him.” He sighed and shrugged at the same time. “But the truth is, I fell in love with the guy, and even though it amazes me every day, he loves me back. So I’m gay.” Grin. “At least operationally.”

Trying to get a grip here. “Roan?”

“Yeah, that’s his name. And I really do want you to meet him; planned on it in fact.” He touched her hand, gently stroking his fingers over her palm, and she just couldn’t pull away. “You both mean so much to me. I want you to love each other too.”

Maybe it would be easier to like a man Jake loved more than it would a woman. Maybe she could beat back the jealousy, knowing he was more interested in men. Fuck, she’d have to.

He sat back. “But I don’t think the faculty award dinner is the place. I don’t want to hide my relationship exactly. My family knows, and they’re great about it, but hell, you know the faculty council and the administration, especially Kovak.”

“Our own private Inquisitor?”

“Yeah. The faculty council will never say they’re firing me because I’m gay. They’ll make up another reason. I just don’t want to rub their faces in it. If they find out some other way, fine.”

She took another deep breath, just trying to cope. “You know, there are several gay men on the faculty. Professor Montag makes jelly beans look colorless, and some others probably cross-dress in their spare time.”

“Yeah, but they stay in the closet. Don’t ask; don’t tell. Plus, they were here before Kovak, so he kind of ignores them.”

“So just bring your, uh…Roan and let them guess. Maybe he’s just a friend or something.”

“He’s a little too noticeable.”

“What? A drag queen?”

He grinned. “No, you’ll see when you meet him.”

One thing was clear. “You have to come to the banquet. Do you get that? And if this man is the one you love, I think he should be there too. Am I making myself clear?”

He laughed. “Yes, Mother.”

“Hey, why don’t you and Roan escort me to the bloody banquet? Then no one will know who’s with whom. We can say he’s a friend of both of ours. You’ll both be my dates. I get to meet him, and he gets to be there for you.”

“I thought you were coming with Henry.”

“Not nearly often enough.” He snorted Chianti. Okay, bad joke, but then Henry was a pretty bad lover. “Anyway, as chance would have it, I haven’t invited him yet, so I’m free to be your diversion.”

“You’re a diversion only in the best possible way.” His face lit up with enthusiasm. “But actually it’s perfect. You’ll come home with us after the banquet and spend the weekend. I’ve been planning to invite you out for weeks, but we’ve been so busy at the lab. So come this weekend. Then you can get to know Roan and see the new house at the same time. You get me where you want me, and” — he chuckled — “I get you where I want you.”

She gazed at the beautiful face. He’d taken off his glasses so nothing distracted from those crystal blue eyes. How often had she fantasized about spending time with him? Sadly, those fantasies had never involved a gay lover. But bottom line, he had to come to the banquet, and a weekend in Connecticut sounded like fun even in the company of two gay men. Of course, the faculty council sure as hell wouldn’t agree with her. They would puke if they knew Doctor Emmaline Silvay, lead researcher and hope for all great international genetics prizes, was consorting with her twenty-six-year-old assistant. Gay assistant. She felt her mom’s rebel blood rise in her veins.

“What time will you pick me up, and what kind of clothes should I pack?”

Author Bio:

Tara Lain, like so many novelists, wrote her first book at five. Writing ability got her through college when there wasn’t enough time in the day, and, shortly thereafter, it became a marketable skill. Very early in life, people started paying her to write — scripts for industrial films, brochures, magazine articles on semiconductors. She became a really successful non-fiction “ghost-writer”.
Now, when you’re being paid well to write non-fiction, it’s tough to spend time writing fiction that nobody pays you for for a long time. But then Tara found EROM (erotic romance). Always a lover of fantasy, she got hooked on the beauty, emotion, and happily-ever-after of these books (to say nothing of the great sex) and was finally inspired to write one of her own. But writing fiction is REALLY different than non-fiction. There was so much to learn, and after writing her first book she went back to school (via online workshops) and really got down to learning the craft. A year later, she had rewritten that book, and created another one, and a very supportive publisher said yes! Today, she’s off and running as a passionate writer of erotic fiction.
Married to a her soul mate, a wonderful man who surprises her every day, Tara continues to love semiconductors and software and medical devices — all with a little touch of romance. She’s also an artist in her spare time (LOL) working in oil and mixed media collage.
Tara would love to:hear from you.
