Menage Week: Threesomes by Shelley Munro

There is nothing hotter than a well-written romance featuring a m?nage a trois. When it comes to erotic romances featuring threesomes, a reader will find lots of combinations available for their reading pleasure. I think author, Dawn Halliday does a great job of describing the possibilities when it comes to multi-partner love.

For me, the attraction of writing a threesome story is in exploring the dynamics of three people as they become a tight unit. My preference when reading a threesome story is for all three characters to have equal standing in the relationship rather than a couple adding a third or hooking up for a one time sexual experience. I like to think of a threesome as something permanent. This is the type of story I prefer to read and the type of story I gravitate to when I’m writing a threesome story. In other words, I tend to write a m/m/f story where there are two men and one woman and all three characters share the love. I enjoy this type of story because I feel there’s more equality between the three main characters if they are all fully involved in the romance.

Writing a m?nage a trois story is challenging. Let’s face it – two people in a relationship can be complicated. Adding an additional third person to the mix can be messy. Jealousy is sometimes an issue. Honesty is a requirement. Open communication is important. Adding an extra character, either male or female, to a relationship brings all sorts of extra emotions to the equation, a very attractive proposition for a writer, I think!

For that reason, most threesome stories are character rather than plot driven with the characters’ reactions driving the story. At the end of the story all three characters are changed.

My story LETICIA’S LOVERS is definitely character driven with the story focusing on the characters Leticia, Gavin and Charlie and their relationship, the jealousy and the building love as they work out where they fit in a viable relationship. However, the disease Leticia suffers from (the feline AIDs) also drives the story a little.

FRINGE BENEFITS is also a character driven story. Marie realizes she has fallen for both Shane and Kelvin. The casual friends with benefits deal they’ve had going isn’t working for her any more. Marie wants forever but she’s worried about rejection, about how Shane and Kelvin will react, and about how a relationship will work if there are three of them.

In Fringe Benefits Shane and Kelvin aren’t lovers, although they’re close friends and they talk about it. They’re not frightened to touch each other, and I leave readers with the impression the three will become lovers in the true sense in the near future. Hmm, I see a follow-up story hovering…

SEX, SPIES and SAPPHIRES is very much a plot driven story in that the characters remain the same throughout the story and react to the plot as it unfolds. Sarah, Flynn and Thomas are different. That’s all I’m saying about this story. You’ll have to read it to learn exactly how it’s different because I don’t want to give away too much.

  • Roberta Harwell:

I like stories with some threesomes. It depends on the relationships. I like it when there are two women and only one man. As long as the jealousy issues have been resolved, this can be wonderful.

    Have a great day.

  • Hi Shelley – I love the panther on the cover of Leticia’s Lovers! Threesomes aren’t something I gravitate towards as a romance – but I can’t stay away from them if they’re a love triangle. Preferably a tragic love triangle, like King Arthur/Guinevere/Launcelot. Or the Phantom/Christine/Raoul. You see my problem!

  • Fedora:

Hi, Shelley! I like reading threesomes sometimes, and tend to prefer M/M/F I think :) I think it’s the idea of having two men attending to my every desire ;)
